According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), more
than one in ten U.S. adults covered by Medicaid have a substance abuse
disorder, including ones involving the misuse of prescription opioids.
Although the U.S makes up less than 5% of the world population, it
consumes more than 80% of the world supply of oxycodone, a commonly
prescribed opioid medication. A special report was released that looks
at prescription opioid use among SC Medicaid enrollees and the potential
value of an opioid prescription monitoring program that began in SC in
2014.
